Now that I'm home for a couple of weeks, my daughter, Elena, and I will be touring the local coffee shops in search for the best espresso. We happened to be in Rapids this weekend so we started the tour at From the Ground Up Coffee and Roasters.
The coffee shop was filled with lots of things to look at, including the VW bus on top of the office area. There was an extensive mug collection of local businesses, which included a Herschleb's mug (which brought a tear to my eye). The atmosphere was perfect for hanging out, plenty of seating and the aroma of fresh roasted coffee was emanating from the back. The staff was very friendly, our barista was very willing to make our stop special.
I ordered a latte and a double espresso. The espresso was big, I think it was a double-double, but it was good. A great value for $1.85. The latte tasted ok, but the milk was not frothed well. It was more like an espresso with warm milk. They roast their own beans right there in the shop, so you can be assured you are getting fresh coffee any day of the week. They use an older Gensaco machine that I didn't recognize, but the barista definitely knows how to use it well. The espresso grinder looked like a Mazzer Super Jolly, but I'm not sure since I couldn't see the label side of the machine.
Overall, I would definitely recommend From the Ground Up to my Rapids friends. I will probably stop by again next time I'm in town for my daily ritual. Their website is www.ftgucoffee.com
