After a relaxing weekend, taking a break from coffee shops and pulling my own shots at home, Elena and I decided we wanted to head back down to Willy St to find more coffee. I know there are a bunch of shops in this area, and I somehow missed them last time we drove down there. We found Ground Zero almost immediately and were pleasantly surprised to find an actual parking lot. Elena was sleeping when we got there and continued to sleep for most of our stay.
Ground Zero is decorated kind of like an old school room. Wooden floors, tables, chairs, globes all over the place, and even the old pull down maps of the world. It was really cool looking. When I walked in, each the tables were occupied by one person and an Apple laptop. It was almost comical, I thought I was in an office or something. I found a couch in the back for Elena and I to sit in.
I ordered a latte and a double espresso. The latte was more of a cappuccino, but was good. The espresso was good, but a little flat and lacking the full body that I like. There was a very thin layer of creme on top, indicating the coffee may have been a bit stale. Once the coffee beans are ground, it can become stale in less than an hour. This is amplified when preparing espresso, you wouldn't really notice if it was regular coffee. The baristas seem to rush the drinks even though it wasn't even busy.
Ground Zero uses a La Cimbali machine and some vintage Mazzer Super Jolly grinders. The coffee is roasted at Cargo Coffee, which the barista explained is owned by the same person. Cargo roasts the beans special for Ground Zero.
I think I would visit Ground Zero again, if I was in the area. It's not worth a special trip to Willy St, but it's definitely a decent cup of coffee. I love the atmosphere and the decorations left plenty to look at. I loved all the vintage stuff sitting around.
