[Lattes with 'Lena - Day 6]

Friday, November 12, 2010

Today, Elena and I didn't really feel like driving all the way downtown. We had heard about a new coffee shop on Nesbitt, so I figured I'd do a drive-by to see what it was. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it is a local business, but also they do their own roasting in the back. I immediately pulled in to give them some money. Elena was in good spirits knowing we would not be driving any further.

The shop had apparently just opened within a week or so, so a "Now Open" sign adorned the front of the business. The place is decorated with kind of a modern-contemporary motif, with couches and comfy chairs to sit in. The roasting room is completely visible from anywhere in the cafe through a glass wall. It kind of reminds me of a microbrewery, the way it's laid out. I was super excited to see that they list their roasting dates on the coffee beans available for purchase, as this is pretty important when it comes to making espresso at home.

I ordered my usual latte followed by a double espresso. The latte was great, featuring a swan on top. The espresso was also very good. It was full of body and had a great after taste. This barista definitely earned his tip.

The machine they use is a La Marzocco, which is usually a pretty common machine. I'm surprised I made it a week only seeing one. The grinder is a Mazzer Super Jolly. They had two of them, so I'm not sure if they have two different roasts available for espresso or if they are using one for grinding for the drip coffee. UPDATE: After asking, I discovered the second grinder is for decaf. True Coffee roasts their own beans in-house, and has fresh roasted beans available for purchase.

I am thrilled to find this place so close to my home. I can't wait to go back. If you are anywhere near Fitchburg and need a cup of coffee, you need to give these guys your business. You won't be disappointed. The coffee isn't quite the level of Bradbury's, but it's very close and I imagine once the barista has more experience with the equipment it will be right up there. This location is much more convenient for me.
