Elena and I headed back down to Willy St for another iconic shop that we definitely needed to hit up, Mother Fools. Elena would not sleep even after a bottle, so she was awake the whole time. My order was quickly declined as they only accept cash, and all I had was plastic. So we went for a walk to find an ATM. Once we had some cash, we went back.
Mother Fools is not much to look at on the outside, and the inside isn't anything special either. The place is pretty sparse, some canvas paintings from a local artist hung on the walls and that's it. Elena found a ceiling fan that she enjoyed looking at during our visit. The furniture is all stuff that you might find at a rummage sale of a poor college kid.
I ordered a latte and a double espresso. The latte featured some art on top, but there was so much milk that the taste of the coffee was hardly present. The espresso was wonderful. Perfectly extracted and disappeared quickly.
The cafe uses a Rancilio machine, possible an Epoca but I couldn't see the business end to verify. The grinder is a Rio. Mother Fools serves Alterra Coffee, which I love. They had some Peace, Love, Happiness blend that I had never had before. It tasted very fruity.
Mother Fools would be a great place if you're looking for a coffee for the road. Not really much of a hangout. Some very interesting characters visiting this establishment while we were there. Oh, and instead of laptops, the people had newspapers! Something I haven't seen for a while.
