Today, Elena and I went on a driving mission to find a random coffee shop. I wanted to check out Willy street, assuming there would be a little shop somewhere. The only one I saw was Cafe Zoma, so we stopped there. Elena slept most of the time, but woke up before we left.
Cafe Zoma is a typical Willy Street business. It is full of bright colors and features artwork from local artists. They have a nice seating area outside in the back, decorated with "Save the Earth" type stuff. We sat inside, because it was bright out and I didn't want to wake Elena. We did make it out back to check it out before we left.
The barista was very friendly, making conversation with everyone as she prepared the drinks. I ordered a latte and a double espresso, as usual. The prices were the most expensive I've seen yet. The lattes are $3.70, but lucky for me it was latte day and it was only $2.25. The double shot of espresso was also expensive at $2.50. The latte was pretty mediocre, I almost didn't order my double espresso afterwards fearing it would be bad. But I made the sacrifice, and ordered it anyways. Just as I expected, it was no good. Sour, bitter, and long.
The espresso machine was a vintage Astra, which I don't know anything about. The espresso grinder was a Rio Normale. Cafe Zoma uses Espresso Royale coffee, which I learned may actually own Cafe Zoma. Espresso Royale is out of Michigan, but has coffee shops all over the nation. This was disappointing, as I'm really trying to visit local shops. I will find a coffee shop ahead of time tomorrow, I have a couple in mind.
Cafe Zoma really did not impress me very much. I will probably not return, as the drinks are not worth the higher price tags. The one thing that it does have going for it is that it's situated right on a bike trail. So you could actually stop there for coffee if you're biking. I could not find a website for Cafe Zoma.
