Hives...What Next?

Sunday, July 11, 2010
As if I wasn't already uncomfortable, I have developed a case of hives. After going to sleep Wednesday night, I woke up at 2:30am for my usual bathroom break. This time, my head seemed to be incredibly itchy. I noticed my hands were also itchy. Once I got into the bathroom, I could see that the outside corner of my eye was swelled up. I woke up Eric to take a look and he gave me some Benedryl. I put an ice pack on my head to try to stop the itchy feeling. I didn't get much sleep for the rest of the night. I continued to take Benedryl throughout the day and the hives seemed to be better. Then at night, I woke up again and they were worse than the first night. I had hives all over my face and neck.

I decided it was time to call my doctor. Right away, Friday morning, I called my OB's clinic to find out what to do. The nurse recommended that I see my regular doctor since it was more of a skin issue. Luckily I was able to get an appointment that morning. As soon as my doctor saw me, she knew it was hives. We were unable to determine how I could had contracted the hives. I haven't used any new hair products or detergents. She called my OB to make sure that I could have certain medications. She prescribed two medications and additionally told me to take Claritin during the day and Benedryl at night.

Well, it's Sunday now and I still have hives. They seem to flare up at night and go away during the day. I think it's because I take my meds during the day. I felt pretty miserable yesterday, but today I feel much better. Hopefully they start to clear up for good. The one benefit of being on all of these antihistamines is that my nasal congestion has cleared up. I've been worried about the effects on the baby, but my doctor said that the baby will be fine and the baby continues to move around quite a bit. Eric and I enjoy watching my belly move around. It looks like rolling waves.

We'll see what tonight brings.
