Florence! This was Eric and my favorite city on our trip.
We found our hotel pretty easily after leaving the train station. It was only about 3 blocks from the train station. Fortunately Eric spotted a McDonalds on the way to our hotel and saw that they had a delicious looking sandwich called a "McItaly." We did stop for one during our three days in Florence.
While in Florence, we toured a few churches and enjoyed the sites of the city. I felt like it was a much more relaxed city than Rome. One of Florence's main attractions is the Duomo. If you've seen any of our pictures of Florence, you've seen the large rust colored dome. The church was amazing, but we also found the basement of the church to be quite interesting. Underneath the Duomo are the remains of an old church in honor of St. Reparata.
Instead of climbing to the top of the Duomo, we decided to go to the Companile (bell tower) which was right next to it. It was far less crowded which I thought would help my claustrophobia. We climbed the 400+ stairs to the top. We were rewarded with an amazing view of the Duomo and all of Florence.
Another one of Florence's main attractions is the Galleria dell'Accademia which is mainly known for housing the statue of David. Eric and I skipped the Uffizi mueseum which was the other large museum in Florence. We decided we were museumed out. We also went to the Basilica of Santa Croce. This is the church which houses the tomb of Michelangelo and Galileo.
We visited the many piazza and checked out the various markets. Florence is known for its leather, but the merchants weren't willing to negotiate. I really enjoyed the food in Florence. My favorite gelato place was right near the the Ponte Vecchio bridge. We had our best dinner at a place called Il Latini. I would highly recommend it. A co-worker had suggested it to us. At this restaurant, you don't order, they just keep bringing out more and more wonderful food that is served family style. We were able to try a great variety of wonderful food. There was also a different type of alcohol served with every course. Eric enjoyed taking care of my alcohol servings.
One of my favorite memories was going to the Piazzale Michelangelo. This Piazzale is across the river (Fiume Arno) from the rest of the city. You have to go up a big hill, but then you have an amazing view of the city. We went there just before sunset. There were amazing views which we enjoyed while having some gelato.
After dinner we would find our way to the Piazza della Signoria which is where the statue of David originally stood. Now, there is a fake version along with other statues. In the evening, there was a guitarist. We would relax and listen. (Ironically, he mainly played American music.)
